Indie game publisher GarageGames plans to use next week’s Macworld Conference & Expo to premiere two new games headed to Mac users’ desktops in 2004: The mecha combat game Dark Horizons: Lore and a new racing game called GravRally.
GarageGames first appeared on the Mac game scene about a year ago. The company licenses its Torque Game Engine, a 3D game engine technology, to independent developers, who use it to power their own games. The underpinning technology that drives the Torque Game Engine was used to create Tribes 2 from Sierra.
GarageGames’ efforts have already resulted in several games for the Mac, including Marble Blast, Orbz and ThinkTanks. Orbz’s developers, 21-6, are the ones behind GravRally. In a statement, 21-6’s president Justin Mette explained that Mac OS X support has been key to GravRally’s development because of their positive experience with Mac users following Orbz’s Mac release.
GravRally puts players in control of high-speed GravBikes as they ride through open environments, even racing on vertical and inverted surfaces. You earn credits by completing any of the 10 different racing modes, and compete in either Solo or Online career modes with online rankings, racing teams, tournaments and sponsored events.
Dark Horizons: Lore developer Max Gaming Technologies has had a similar experience — president Adrian Wright said that 40 percent of the game’s beta test applicants have been Mac users.
Dark Horizons: Lore puts players in a futuristic Cold War where three superpowers have squared off, battling for ultimate control. You build a clan, create alliances, and combat other giant mecha (robots) called MAVs. You use an arsenal of offensive and defensive technology like jump jets, homing missiles, rockets, plasma guns and laser cannon.
