Mac OS 9.x, based on Mac OS 8 was the final product based on the classic MacOS architecture. Like previous version, it lacks true protected memory or pre-emptive multitasking. MacOS 9 was abandoned in favor of of the Unix-ish NextStep/Openstep based Mac OS X. Running MacOS 9 requires a supported Power PC based Macintosh (see the compatibility matrix), or the following. First of all, there are no C features that are dependent on Unix. C runs just fine on Windows, and it runs just fine on 8-bit microcontrollers. As for classic Mac OS, there were two primary programming environments: Metrowerks CodeWarrior and Apple's MPW. CodeWarrior came with a library called SIOUX which opened up a window and provided simple I/O. A fair price for a stellar piece of software. If you own an older Mac, OS 9.2.x is the best way to go; it's faster than 9.1 and supports the most amount of software prior to OS X. This particular product is a full release which is what you want instead of an iffy upgrade version, because you can install the entire OS from scratch if you need to.

The 9.2.1 update requires users to have Mac OS 9.1 installed if they are performing an automatic or manual update. Apple said that the new operating system can be installed on Mac OS X-compatible computers, including the Power Mac G3, Power Mac G4, PowerBook G3 (except for the original PowerBook G3), PowerBook G4, iMac and iBook.

Separate versions of the 9.2.1 installer have been created for North American and International English markets; French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, and Japanese language versions are also supported. The update is available either as a single installer or as a multi-part download. The size of the upgrade depends on the localized language version being downloaded; it ranges from 82MB to 103.5MB.
